Alimony refers to the amount of money the court orders one spouse to pay for the support of another. Alimony may also be referred to as maintenance.

Adult shall be construed to apply to any person of the age of 18 years or older.

Child shall be taken to apply to any person under the age of 18 years old.

Child Support in accordance with 16 V.I. Code Ann. § 342 refers to all that is necessary for the maintenance, housing, clothing, and medical needs of the child.

Complaint (Adult) refers to a written statement of the essential facts constituting the offense charged. It shall be verified by the oath of the person complaining before a judge, clerk or deputy clerk of the court, or the Attorney General of the Virgin Islands, or such Assistant Attorney General as the Attorney General shall authorize in writing, as well as any complaint clerk in the office of the Attorney General of the Virgin Islands.

(Juvenile) refers to a written statement of the essential facts which are alleged to bring the child within the jurisdiction of the juvenile and domestic relations division of the court. It shall be upon oath before a judge, clerk, or other officer empowered by law to receive complaints.

Contempt refers to a party's refusal to comply with an Order of the Court.

Custody determination in accordance with 16 V.I. Code Ann. § 116 (a) refers to a court decision and court orders and instructions providing for the temporary or permanent custody of a child, including visitation rights. It does not include a decision relating to child support or any other monetary obligation of any person.

Custody proceeding in accordance with 16 V.I. Code Ann. § 116 (b) refers to the proceedings in which a custody determination is at issue, or is one of several issues, including any action or proceeding brought to annul a marriage or to declare the nullity of a void marriage, or for a separation, or for a divorce.

Divorce refers to the legal action filed for the dissolution of marriage.

Domestic Violence in accordance with 16 V.I. Code Ann. § 91 refers to the occurrence of any attempts or threats against a person who has been subjected to domestic violence by a spouse, former spouse, parent, child, or any other person related by blood or marriage, a present or former household member, a person with whom the victim has a child in common, or a person who is or has been, in a sexual or otherwise intimate relationship. The act of domestic violence includes: assault, battery, burglary, kidnapping, unlawful sexual contact; rape; forcible or unlawful entry; coercion, destruction of property; harassment; threats; false imprisonment; or stalking.

Domestic Violence Complaint a victim of domestic violence may file a complaint alleging the commission of an act of domestic violence with the Family Division of the Superior Court. In accordance with 16 V.I. Code Ann. § 96 (a), the complaint may be filed in any judicial division where: the plaintiff resides; the defendant resides, the alleged abuse occurred, or the plaintiff is temporarily located if he or she has left their residence to avoid further abuse.

Hearing refers to any proceeding in a juvenile or adult cause before a judge of the Court the examination of plaintiff and defendant or offender, and such witnesses as may be procured.

Juvenile Causes shall include any proceeding originating through a complaint to the Court alleging that any child is within the jurisdiction of the juvenile and domestic relations division of the court under 4 V.I. Code Ann. § 172.

Oath solemn statement which includes affirmations to tell the truth or take a certain action.

Trial refers to any proceeding in an adult cause before the Court.
